Waiting around for something to change my mood'Cause I know that butts and plastic cups isn't going toKids on the lawn stuck in pairs of twoYour lunch is on its way back upBut you're still in the pool

Wait insideI'll be fineI guess I'll sit outsideWhile you change your mind

I'll risk it all to find a place where I can hear my thoughtsSong's playing too loudBut upstairs they're still making out

I'm getting all choked upI guess it's just my luckAnd I'm stuck on the porchWhat am I waiting for?

Wait insideI'll be fineI guess I'll sit outsideWhile you change your mind

Wait insideI'll be fineWait inside

Change your mindOh honey, change your mind

Overall Meaning

The Backseat Lovers’ song “Pool House” is an emotive piece about feeling like an outsider amongst friends, and the frustration this can cause. The song’s protagonist finds that the party atmosphere, with all its artificiality, doesn’t improve their mood. As “butts and plastic cups” litter the pool-side space, everyone else pairs off and relaxes, whilst the singer feels out of place. However, despite feeling uncomfortable the singer sticks around, either out of politeness or the hope that things may change. The song lyrics are relatable, as many people can attest to feeling like they don’t fit in at some point.

The lyrics contain a sense of hopelessness, with the singer becoming “choked up” as they recognize that things aren’t going to improve for them. The line “I’m stuck on the porch/What am I waiting for?” demonstrates the singer’s sense of stagnation. They are unable to leave and find their comfort elsewhere, instead of remaining stagnant in the hope that things get better. The singer wants to find “a place where [they] can hear [their] thoughts” but feels trapped behind the racket of the party. The song is a poignant reflection on the dehumanization that can occur when we hide our true selves in favor of being accepted by others.
